So far our B&B in Stratford was the best. But once again I question the English Breakfast, today including mushrooms, which I declined. Karsten and Eric had the fried eggs, I choose to have mine scrambled.
We left a bit before nine at still had ample time before touring Kenilworth Castle which was the home of Robert Dudley, courtier to Queen Elisabeth the First. These were mostly ruins but they left the impression of how great the buildings must have been. The castle dates way back to medieval times and was visited by the reigning queen. The garden is small but quite pretty and sitting in the back is an aviary for canaries. I had to overcome my fear of heights climb the stairs that were installed to see where the former bed chambers of the queen where built. The whole site is impresand we stayed nearly two hours before we continued our drive to Bolsover Castle.
Driving intensiv UK is of course a challenge. One that I am glad that Karsten has taken on. No matter what the English say, they are in a minority. The truck drivers have honked several times which put them in my league of the most unfriendly drivers. My pulse is usually quite high and I am sure Karsten thinks I’m too nervous. The luxury car industry in the UK must be excellent, we’ve seen countless Jaguars, Audis, Mercedes and BMWs on motorway.
Our next stop before York was Bolsover Castle another ruin but with an excellent preserved „Little Castle“. The wooden panels were restored and leave an impression of how extravagant it was. The owner was William Cavendish.
We reached our destination York in the early evening. Here we are staying at the Mercure York Fairfield Manor instead of a B&B.
