On the path of history

We were planned for breakfast at 8am, so we were the first in the dining room of our B&B. We were served the typical English Breakfast which consisted of a fried egg, bacon (the thick kind), baked beans and half a tomato. Haven’t figured out the reason for having beans and tomatoes for breakfast.

We started off for Stonehenge which is about an hour away from Bath. We arrive shortly after 10 am and even though our booking was for 11 am, we were able to take the shuttle bus to go onsite. So much has changed in 6 years. We really took our time and took a lot of pictures as well as paying attention to the audio guide. Again all the new knowledge that was gained was put into the guides. So we learned a lot about the history. We spent nearly two hours at Stonehenge.

Next stop was Glastonbury. First goal was to satisfy the feeling of hunger, so we headed to downtown Glastonbury. The wonderful array of the people amazed me the first time and again it was beautiful to see the many facets of people that walk along the street. We stopped at the 100 Monkeys. I had hummus with pitta. Karsten and Eric had some cake. We were lucky to try some ice cream as the manager was having a tasting next to our table. The longing glances and the drool running down our chin probably encouraged him to offer us a cup of Northen Bloc Madagascan Bourbon Vanilla. Yum!

As a champion at the Chalice Well, I support them every year with a donation. This enabled us to free entry to the Gardens. A beautiful and tranquil place. Next time I’ll come without a teenager who doesn’t have the patience for meditating. Or just enjoying the bubble sound of the Red Spring. Also it would have been quieter without the tourists. For a weekday it was quite full. I wanted to visit the White Well but it is closed on Wednesday’s and Thursday’s. Better luck next time. We then headed up the hill to the Glastonbury Tor. It was very windy but the view, sunshine and blue skies was amazing. We took our time enjoying the moment and the unusual summer weather.

We then headed back to Bath and thankfully the Roma Baths are open till 9 pm, so we were able to take a tour. Again it was fascinating to learn about the history of Great Britain and the Romans. The spring is still bubbling but bathing there is not possible. They do have a new bath and spa, but we don’t have enough time. Tomorrow we are on the road to our next destination. We did have dinner in Bath, at the Aqua, which also was great and proof that good food exists in Britain. Let’s just ignore the beans for breakfast.
