What to do when you don’t know what to do

Of course we weren’t on the road every day and we didn’t spend the whole day in or by the pool.

What else is there to do in the Cape Coral region?

There’s always something going on Friday nights in the Historic District in Fort Myers. The first time we experienced the Art Walk, which was nice but since we’re not into art we had no idea what was going on. What we did notice was that you could buy drinks and carry them around. Reminded me a little bit of New Orleans. The following week though was Mystery Walk, it’s a bit like a scavenger hunt. We participated, had fun going in and out of shops but we didn’t win any of the cash prizes. Instead I spent over 40$ in the Naples Soap Shop, a bit like Lush but with more Caribbean smells. Yummy!

The Regal Cinema at the Gulf Coast Town Center is our favorite movie theater. They have an IMAX screen so adventure movies are more fun to watch. My very own personal opinion: If the cinema offers popcorn with butter I’m happy. In Germany you only get sweet popcorn. If you happen to live near a big city then you will find a cinema that offers salted popcorn but not everyone lives near a big city. So I indulge everytime. Sadly the kilos I gain here take forever to disappear back home.

Shopping is of course a must. No where else can you find a decent pair of jeans for under 30€. Clothes are definitely cheaper than food. It does make you wonder. You can have a closet full of clothes but an empty fridge. The Sanibel Outlets (formally known as the Tanger Outlets) are a bit smaller than the Miromar Outlets but have the big names too. Miromar is huge and you really need to know what you’re looking for otherwise you’ll spend hours on end and Florida has so much to offer.

Mini Golf also known as Putt-Putt Golf has been family fun for years. Something for all ages and never boring. These courses just cannot be compared to what we have in Germany. This year we headed once again down the road to the Tropical Breeze Fun Park where you will find the longest mini golf hole in the world. We played there twice and both times I came in third. First game was won by Karsten and the second by Eric. Our final putt putt golf was played at Castle Golf in Fort Myers. Both men came in even. Don’t even ask my results.

I was so enchanted that I lost!

Sunsets are also quite beautiful. The houses aren’t built so closely as in the town we live in, so you can enjoy a beautiful sunset from home. But of course a sunset on the water is ten times nicer. When not in Key West, head out to Bookelia on Pine Island. Not only is the sunset beautiful but also the dolphin sightings, herons, huge rays and pelicans.

We finally got around to visit the „Wicked Dolphin“. It’s not some wild animal to view from or on the water but the only rum distillery in Florida. The tour is for free and and not only is it fun but interesting. Afterwards there is also a free tasting. Since no bottles are allowed in hand luggage and the risk of a bottle breaking in our suitcase, we opted out in buying some. But highly recommend it if you have the chance!

What a variety.
