Today I can offer a long version or a short version. For the short version scroll to the bottom. It was late last night, the Germans didn’t manage to win their game in the regular playing time. The alarm went off at 7:30, we had an appointment at 9:00 am to go fishing with Frank Donnelly. The sun was already shining and the next question was: what shall we wear. The weather forecast said that the temps. would be around 18 C. We were at the guesthouse at 8:55, quite punctual. Anne told us to drive down to the lake. I heard her say: drive by the house. Karsten heard her say: down the road. So we headed off down the road. And we drove and drove and drove, catching a glimpse every now and then of the lake, but nothing leading down to it. I had a feeling we were half way around the lake. I tried to call Anne or Frank, but my mobile had zero connection. Then Karsten tried with his and he reached Ann who then asked where we were. She told us to come back and drive by the house. We finally arrived back at the house and saw that there was a path beside the house leading down to the lake. When we finally arrived, no one was there, wanting to head back to the house we started off again, only to have Frank drive up in front of us. When we got into the boat, Frank asked if we had bought a fishing license. Uh, no. So we all got into our car, drove to Waterville to buy a fishing license. By the time we were finally sitting in the boat heading out on the lake it was 10:00. The sun was still shining. Which makes it a bad day to go fishing. Fish don’t like sunny days. After almost 90 minutes something pulled on the rod that Karsten was holding, but whatever was pulling didn’t want to be caught. So Karsten pulled out an empty hook. We went zigzag, around in circles, we covered a lot of the lake, for lunch we stopped on a little finger reaching into the lake where Karsten and Eric tried themselves at fly fishing. It was breezy and fresh, so we actually had to sit with zipped jackets. We got into the boat again and had four rods once again dangling in the water. Zigzag, circles, straight ahead. No fish. At 5:00 pm we arrived back to where we started. No fish for supper. Good thing that grocery stores are open here, on a Sunday, till 9:00 pm. We didn’t have to starve. But we didn’t have fish. We had potatoes, mushy peas and sausages. Plans for tomorrow? Only for dinner. The short version: We went fishing and didn’t catch a fish. :-p
